Condo proposal for Harris site to hearing

Delta council has given preliminary approval to a proposed condo complex that would occupy the former Harris Nursery site in Tsawwassen.

Delta council has given preliminary approval to a proposed condo complex that would occupy the former Harris Nursery site in Tsawwassen.

Located at the corner of 12th Avenue and 54A Street, a variance was applied for in order to build a 58-unit, four-storey complex with units ranging from 678 square feet to 1,862 square feet. An underground parking area would include 96 parking spaces - 84 for residents and 12 for visitors.

A mini park, called Rotary Corner, would be located at one corner of the development as a public amenity, while a rain garden is also proposed in the boulevard along 12th Avenue.

At a public meeting attended by about 20 people last fall, some of the comments included concerns about loss of light and privacy, lack of street parking and lack of frequent public transportation to get people out of Tsawwassen.

A couple of petitions were also received during the consultation process - a 43-name petition from nearby residents in opposition and a 166-signature petition of residents, the majority residing in Tsawwassen, in favour.

A report to council notes the owner has addressed several neighbourhood concerns by allotting more visitor parking spaces and reducing the height and massing of the building at the south elevation.

The proposal will go to a public hearing next Tuesday.
