Community activists lobbying against port expansion in Delta are promoting a new seven-minute video about Roberts bank, its uniqueness and risks associated with adding a second terminal.
The film FLYWAY by Cliff Caprani for the groups Citizens against Port Expansion and Against Port Expansion is aimed at raising awareness about what they say is the plight of the Western Sandpiper.
The shorebirds could become collateral damage if Vancouver Fraser Port Authority receives permission to construct the terminal with the central issue being biofilm, a slimy goop the birds feed on, they warn
“Roberts Bank, with its Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) designation is recognized as one of the most significant such areas in the Americas...Roberts Bank biofilm will be significantly degraded by the construction and operation of the new facility, putting at risk millions of shorebirds and other wildlife species that rely on this rich ecosystem. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) scientists have similar concerns, saying that ‘the impacts on biofilm will be permanent, irreversible & continuous’,” the groups states.
