Delta Deas Rowing Club's junior program tuned up for its own competition this weekend with a strong showing at the 53rd annual Shawnigan Lake Regatta.

The event took place at the beautiful Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park and featured some of the top high school crews in Western Canada. For the most part, the weekend weather co-operated and allowed for the events to run on time. Saturday's races were delayed for three hours due to winds. Once the officials felt that the water conditions were once again safe, the events were restarted. As always, the contingent of 18 juniors represented the Delta Deas Rowing Club with great sportsmanship, and team unity. They produced two gold medals, along with a silver and bronze.

The golds were won by Alex Larocque, Daniel Kruckenberg, Ben Morton, Trevor MacDougall, and Natalie Whitehead. Robert Hodgins earned the silver and the bronze came from the crew of Gurvir Sandhawalia, Maia Christian, Katrina Shipowich and Eve Grébert. Most of the other Delta Deas crews placed between fourth and ninth in their respective events.

These young athletes are now looking forward to the 25th annual Delta Deas Scholastic Regatta at Deas Island Regional Park. The two-day event features racing all day Saturday and Sunday with over 450 rowers from across the province scheduled to compete.
