Ann Claggett was a dedicated community volunteer.

Former Delta councillor Ann Claggett passed away last Friday.

She was a member of council from 1987 to 1993 and then again from 1999 to 2002.

A longtime resident and dedicated community volunteer, Claggett, who was 73, was the founding chairman ElderCollege Delta, formed a vision impairment support group and was on the Cammidge House Committee and Delta Arts Council. She was also past chairman Delta Hospital board, Lower Mainland Municipal Association, Delta’s parks and recreation commission and served on many municipal and Greater Vancouver Regional District committees as well as the Fraser Valley Regional Library board. She also spent time helping such groups as the Delta Hospital Auxiliary and the Boys' and Girls' Club.

When she last ran for council in 2005, she said Delta Hospital and its future remains an important issue, noting citizens are entitled to have essential services close to home.

Claggett remained involved in the community after her days on council, including being the point person for opponents of the proposed artificial turf field/library project at Winskill Park in 2006.

At Delta council this week, Mayor Lois Jackson on behalf of council extended deepest condolences to the family of Ann Claggett. Saying she was a respected member of council, Jackson said she felt like she just lost a very old friend.

A celebration of Claggett’s life is planned for Sunday, Nov. 29 at the Beach Grove Golf Club from noon to 4 p.m.
