In B.C., the province's electricity load was reduced by 1.95 per cent during Earth Hour Saturday night. However, in Delta, the municipality's overall electricity usage dropped by 2.9 per cent for that one-hour period - a significant increase over last year's reduction of 1.2 per cent.

The total provincial energy savings from Earth Hour participation since 2008 is 500.27 megawatt hours of electricity, the equivalent of turning off 40 million 12.5-watt LED light bulbs.

Earth Hour is an annual global event hosted by the World Wildlife Fund and supported provincially by B.C. Hydro. The goal of the event is to encourage individuals to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics in an effort to conserve power and in doing so, demonstrate support for the fight against climate change.

The Corporation of Delta is running an Earth Hour contest again this year. Tell the municipality how you saved electricity during Earth Hour and you will be entered to win an energy saving prize package.

To be eligible to win send your name, contact information and your Earth Hour activity on or before Thursday, March 28 to [email protected].
