Delta Secondary automotive instructor Casey Mynott and his students recently debuted the “most powerful 100 per cent electric junior dragster ever built” at Mission Raceway.

The dragster features a 141.1-volt battery pack running at 1,200 amps, Mynott said.

A project three years in the making, the dragster had a best time/speed of around nine seconds, reaching 72 mph on the 1/8th mile run.

Mynott said there were communication issues where the dragster was shutting down half way down the track, not allowing the group to turn it up to full power. The dragster also had issues with its chain tensioner.
DSS automotive student Tyler Schmidt drove the dragster while the pit crew was comprised of Jake Kwasnicki, Mynott, Duncan Cowen, James Bartz, Kristine Carrick, Emery Pope, Chris Oakley, Don Obyrne and Schmidt’s father David.

“But, for the vehicle’s first time out and Tyler’s first time on a drag racing track in his life, [it was] a very, very successful day,” Mynott said in an email to the Optimist.

He said the group plans to fix the dragster’s issues and be back at the track in late September.
