Delta throwback: That was quite a float

The PNE Parade was held in Vancouver on Hastings Street from 1935 to 1995 with a one-time special event in 2010 to mark the fair’s 100th anniversary

The 36-foot float marked the first time a float had been entered by Delta since 1938.

Let’s head back to Aug. 19, 1961 to check out the huge, colourful float by the Municipality of Delta in that year’s PNE Parade.

Featuring a nine-foot sockeye salmon and 10-foot-high farmer with a moving head, the float carried several Delta Harvest Princesses and that year’s Harvest Queen, 16-year-old Susan Reuss.

Delta’s Harvest Festival was held July 28 at Memorial Park, sponsored by Delta Lodge No. 21 I.O.O.F.

The event featured a parade, music, games dancing under the stars and the crowing of the Harvest Queen.
