The NDP’s John Horgan has officially been sworn-in as the province’s 36th premier.
Horgan and his new cabinet were sworn-in by Lieutenant-Governor Judith Guichon on Tuesday afternoon in Victoria.
It is the first time in 16 years that the NDP are in power, although it is a razor thin minority government. The NDP have 41 MLAs and are being propped up by the Green’s three MLAs, who together outvote the Liberals by a 44-43 margin.
“Our government will offer families relief from high costs and fees, strengthen services like health care and education, and create good jobs and economic opportunity across B.C.,” Horgan said in a news release. “We will put people at the heart of everything we do. And we’ll work hard to deliver on our commitments to British Columbians.”
Horgan’s new cabinet is made up of 20 ministers and two ministers of state. In addition, six MLAs have been named parliamentary secretaries. There are 10 women in cabinet and one named minister of state.
“Starting today, we will deliver a government that works for people,” added Horgan. “We’re going to work hard every day to build a better B.C.”
Horgan will hold his first cabinet meeting with the Greens on Wednesday and then spend the rest of the summer getting up to speed on files and government transition.
Horgan plans to re-call the legislature in the first week of September.
