Delta throwback: Service station near the tunnel

The site near the entrance to the George Massey Tunnel will look much different with new housing and the casino next door
former shell gas station at highways 17a and 99 junction
The car repair area of the gas station would cease in the business later years.

Let’s take another step back in time to the 1960s and check out the opening of the new Shell gas and service station, which for many years would front the Town and Country Inn.

Located near the George Massey Tunnel, both are gone as a casino/hotel complex now occupies the former hotel site.

Shato Holdings stills owns the property and is leasing it to Gateway Casino & Entertainment.

The gas station, which shut down several years ago, has been demolished to make way for a new housing development.

In the summer of 2022, city council, following a public hearing, granted third reading for a rezoning and Official Community amendment for an application by Shato Holdings for a 153-unit development at the former gas station site.

The project includes 138 condos in two buildings and 15 townhouse units.

The project is still waiting for a sign-off from the provincial government before Delta council grants final approval.
