Ladner throwback: A new service station near the tunnel

The site near the entrance to the George Massey Tunnel could look vastly different with new housing and nearby casino
former shell gas station at highways 17a and 99 junction
The car repair component of the gas station shut down in its later years.

Let’s take another step back in time to the 1960s and check out the opening of the new Shell gas station which for many years would front to Town and Country Inn.

Located near the George Massey Tunnel, both are now gone as a $70 million casino/hotel project is under construction at the former hotel site.

Shato Holdings stills owns the property and is leasing it to Gateway Casino & Entertainment.

The city recently received a preliminary proposal by Shato Holdings for a new 153-unit housing complex where the former gas station was located.

The subject site would be created by subdivision and consolidated into a new lot located near the Highway 17A and 99 junction.

The housing would be within two, six-storey apartment buildings with 58 and 80 units respectively, located at the north and east portions of the site.

A three-storey townhouse building with 15 units would be located along the west boundary of the site, connected by an under-building parkade for residents and visitors accessed via a new private road.
