Delta Police focus was on education and enforcement

Delta Police issued hundreds of violation tickets in March for distracted driving.

Lots of motorists in Delta are still not getting the message.

That’s one of the takeaways from the Delta Police and ICBC Distracted Driving Month campaign, which took place throughout the month of March.

DPD said the focus of the traffic team was to provide education and enforcement for those who were distracted while driving.

“The team started off the month hopeful that drivers were already aware of the implications of distracted driving, but quickly realized that was not the case,” said DPD in a post on social media.

DPD say officers issued 298 violation tickets for use of an electronic device while driving during the month. That is a 210 percent increase from the monthly average.

DPD say if you're still using your phone (or distracted in another way), here is what you need to know:

  • You are five times more likely to crash if you're distracted
  • Most rear-end crashes involve distracted drivers
  • There are all types of distractions, but cellphone use is the most common
  • The violation ticket amount is $368 and four points.
