Inclusion B.C. launched a challenge last week calling on MLAs to hire people with developmental disabilities in their constituency offices.

“I think it’s a great idea,” says Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington. “People who have developmental disabilities can easily be employed to do needed office tasks with full competence. I know this because I have three employees who fall into this category.”

In support of this initiative, Huntington invited her three employees to visit her office in Victoria last Thursday and introduced them in the legislature.

The challenge, called Ready, Willing and Able, is part of a bigger goal of employing thousands across B.C. with developmental disabilities. According to Inclusion B.C., only one in four people of working age that have a developmental disability or autism are employed, despite their desire and ability to work.

“There are thousands of working-age adults who want to be employed and can be,” says Huntington. “Though it may require a commitment to more initial training, my experience has demonstrated that employing these individuals is a rewarding experience for all those involved.

“I’m very happy with their work and I encourage other employers to participate in the program.”
