More Delta seniors are working full-time jobs.

That’s according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada, which found nearly one in five Canadians aged 65 and over are still the workforce. It’s the highest proportion recorded since the 1981 census. The percentage of seniors who reported working nearly doubled between 1995 and 2015.

In 2015, 5.9 per cent of Canadian seniors worked all year, full-time.

In Delta, the employment rate among residents age 65 and over was 11.7 per cent in 2006, increasing to 14.7 in 2011, and 15.1 per cent in 2016.

The census found that 68.2 per cent of those seniors were employees while around 32 per cent were self-employed, the highest proportion of self-employed among Delta’s age groups.

The number of part-time and full-time working Delta seniors increased with the biggest increase seen in full-time, full-year, who now comprise 6.8 per cent of the work force.
