appearance
Police were called to a home in the 4900-block of 5th Avenue last weekend.

The man accused in the death of his father in Tsawwassen over the Victoria Day long weekend made his first court appearance earlier this week.

Richard Maranda, 44, of Vancouver, made a brief appearance in Surrey provincial court Tuesday afternoon via video link. Dressed in blue, Maranda appeared calm and said little during the proceedings, which only lasted a few minutes.

He remains in custody and will make his next court appearance next week.

Maranda is facing a charge of first-degree murder in the death of his 72-yearold father, Frederick Dale Maranda.

Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sarah Swallow said Frederick Dale Maranda was found at a home in the 4900-block of 5th Avenue by a family member, who called paramedics. The paramedics then called police.

Richard Maranda was located and arrested without incident at another location within hours of the incident. Police have not yet disclosed how his father died.
