New Year's resolutions

How do you feel about New Year's resolutions? Do you make them? Do you keep them? Do you hate them? Opinions differ - people seem to either swear by them or swear at them.

How do you feel about New Year's resolutions? Do you make them? Do you keep them? Do you hate them? Opinions differ - people seem to either swear by them or swear at them.

I recently came across two articles that approached resolutions from two different perspectives. One took a more dim view, claiming that 25 per cent of people abandon their New Year's resolutions after one week, and that the average person makes the same resolution 10 times without success. Not inspiring...

The second was a study from the University of Scranton on New Year's Resolution Statistics from last year. The top four categories of resolutions in 2014 were: self-improvement or education; weight; money; and relationships. This study had a

more optimistic perspective, claiming that people "who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don't explicitly make resolutions." That is a significant claim.

Whatever your views on resolutions, we all have a new year stretching before us like a fresh field of unbroken snow. We get to choose how we are going to track it up. So whatever we want to call them, let's set some significant goals for 2015 and commit to seeing them through.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. (Proverbs 3:5-6, NLT) Mike invites dialogue at [email protected].
