North Delta crime beat: Resident falls victim to Facebook Marketplace scam

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. *April 7, 7100 Block of 120th Street: During a proactive patrol, police observed a vehicle without insurance and conducted a traffic stop. Due to the driver’s behavior as well as an observed empty beer bottle, breath samples were requested. Two samples provided by the driver with both read “fail.” The driver was served with a 90-day immediate roadside suspension and the vehicle impounded. The driver and passenger were picked up by a family member. 

*April 8, PSB 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported they had engaged in sending and receiving sexual images on Instagram to a “female” they met on “Wizz”.  The “female” then identified themselves as male and requested $100 in return for not distributing the images. The complainant indicated they made several unsuccessful attempts to pay before finally reporting to police. All phone numbers and accounts associated with the incident were blocked by the complainant. Parents of the complainant were informed and will have phone numbers changed. Police advised the victim and parent of StopNCII.org, which supports victims of non-consensual intimate images.

*April 9, 11900 Block of 89A Avenue: Complainant reported their vehicle was stolen, sometime overnight, from outside their residence. The vehicle is red and has a distinctive black bumper. No witnesses or suspects have been identified. Vehicle entered as stolen on the Canadian Police Information Centre.

*April 9, 7600 Block of 118th Street: Complainant reported someone entered their open carport and stole four new Falken tires mounted on Niche VOSSO rims valued at $3,750 and a Ryobi 2700 Psi gas pressure washer valued at $550. Police canvased the area, but no witnesses or surveillance video located.

*April 9: 116th St and Nordel Way: Officers were notified of a four-vehicle collision on Nordel Way at 116th St at 10:13 a.m. There were no injuries as a result of this collision. An eastbound vehicle turned left, northbound onto 116th St. on a yellow light when a westbound vehicle collided with the turning vehicle. Two southbound vehicles stopped at the red light were struck as a result of the primary collision. All four vehicles required tows from the scene and damage value exceeds $10,000.

*April 10, Public Safety Building 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant attended the Public Safety Building to report they had been the victim of fraud over Facebook Marketplace.  The complainant agreed to sell a pair of shoes for $820 and shipped the shoes to the buyer’s address in Ontario. The complainant contacted Canada Post to halt the shipment but were informed this could not be commenced until a police file number received.
