A 49-year-old pilot of a small plane escaped serious injury after a daring emergency landing on Highway 91 in North Delta Wednesday.

Shortly after 6 p.m., as the afternoon rush hour was winding down, the Amphibian Ultralight aircraft made an emergency landing in the southbound lanes of the highway between 72nd and 64th avenues. The plane's nose ended up on the concrete median but nobody on the ground was hurt.

According to Delta police, the pilot was coming from Surrey's King George Airpark and was flying over the Delta area when it is believed the plane lost power, causing a forced landing on the highway.

Police say the pilot was taken to hospital for evaluation of non-life threatening injuries.

Southbound traffic on the highway had to be diverted for several hours, but traffic both ways eventually reopened around 9 p.m. Delta police are working with the National Transportation Safety Board in the investigation.
