Police warn public about spike in bicycle thefts

Delta police are reminding residents to keep their bikes locked at all times after a recent spike in thefts in Ladner.

Delta police are reminding residents to keep their bikes locked at all times after a recent spike in thefts in Ladner.

"Over the course of the past few weeks, Delta police have noted an increase in thefts of bicycles in Ladner," said department spokesperson Sgt. Ciaran Feenan.

The majority of the thefts have taken place along Ladner Trunk Road, particularly from bike racks around local malls.

"There have also been bicycles stolen from residential garages and sheds," Feenan said.

"In some cases, owners are leaving their bikes unlocked to run some errands and when they return their bicycle has been stolen."

Police are reminding the public to protect their property by securing bikes with quality locks at all times; writing down the serial number of all bikes; and engraving information on bikes that would help identify the rightful owner.

Officers and Ladner CoPS volunteers continue to patrol the areas that have been targeted in recent weeks.

The Ladner CoPS office also has an engraving machine on hand for loan to the public. Anyone wishing to use the machine is asked to call 604-9404411 to ensure it is available.

Anyone with information about the recent increase in bike thefts is asked to call Delta police at 604-946-4411 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.
