Tsawwassen's Bruce Fougner is going on a 13-day, 1,500-kilometre cycling trip to raise money for cancer care at Delta Hospital.

Fougner, a Delta Hospital Foundation board director, will depart for Calgary next Tuesday. Cancer is "near and dear to a lot of people," Fougner said, adding he thought the cycling trek would be a "bucket list thing to do."

He has been training by cycling to work and also riding on the weekend.

His planned route includes cycling through Manning Park and the Okanagan, over Rogers Pass and then north through the Columbia Icefield to Jasper.

Fougner will be cycling with IRIS president Francis Jean for the initial stretch and once in Jasper they'll meet up with more cyclists taking part in the IRIS Challenge, a cancer fundraising ride.

The group will travel back down the Columbia Icefield to Lake Louise and Banff to before finishing in Calgary.

Fougner noted he and his wife are billeting two riders taking part in the Tour de Delta.

"So I'm hoping to get some inspiration and coaching from them," he said. Fougner also noted he'll be accepting pledges at an event at TD Canada Trust in Tsawwassen Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit dhfoundation.ca/build-a-page/370 to donate or http://iris.ca/challengeiris for more on the IRIS Challenge.
