It’s going to take longer than expected to refurbish the historic hangar at Boundary Bay Airport.
According to civic staff, the project remains ongoing but was delayed this year due to bad weather and the slow pace at which the roof can be safely removed of asbestos.
Although the barrel roof is more than two-thirds done, the original proposal to finish the roof after the Boundary Bay Airshow couldn’t be met.
The roof replacement is estimated at $1 million, which is being funded from the sale of airport lands. The costs are still within budget and contingency, but the hangar refurbishment is now likely a year behind.
The hangar was constructed in 1941 on land purchased by the federal government for a Royal Canadian Air Force training school during from the Second World War. The ongoing restoration also included replacing rotten structural columns and other works.
According to Delta, such hangars are increasingly rare as they are vulnerable to fire and could be redundant for modern airport use.
