South Delta Crime Beat: Alcohol complaints and counterfeit bills prompt calls to ferry terminal

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. Tsawwassen

*Aug. 2, 1600 Block of 56th Street: Complainant reported arriving home to find an unknown female in the kitchen. When confronted the suspect indicated her mother used to live in the suite and had left her the key. The suspect then left and walked towards 16th Avenue.  Police attended and observed several rooms rummaged through and found the patio door unlocked. The suspect is described as Caucasian, 25 to 35 years of age, 5’7”, medium build, long red hair, wearing a pink dress, and carrying a black backpack. Extensive patrols of the area proved negative.

*Aug. 3, 5100 Block of Canoe Pass Way: A citizen reported they had lost their wallet in the parking lot of a business. As a search of the area did not find the wallet, it was assumed it may have been taken from the area by the finder. Later, the citizen informed police that someone had posted on a group chat that their wallet had been found.

*Aug. 5, 5000 Block of Canoe Pass Way: A business reported a male had stolen goods valued at approximately $800 including hoodies, shirts, a yellow Herschel back pack, and a skateboard. The male is described as six feet tall, wearing all black, including a ball cap, T- shirt, shorts, and shoes.

*Aug. 6, 5100 Block of Canoe Pass Way: A business provided police with descriptions of three females who had stolen several items and exited the store. From the description police located and arrested the suspects who possessed several stolen items. As the females were young teenagers and the goods were of low value, they were accompanied by police as they returned the items to various businesses. The suspects were banned from the businesses and their parents were informed.

*Aug. 6, 1 Ferry Causeway: Police were informed that while the crew were unloading the ferry, they detected the smell of alcohol on the breath of a driver. Police conducted a stop of the vehicle and the driver provided two breath samples both reading ‘fail.’ The driver was given an immediate 90-day roadside suspension and a 30-day driving suspension. The vehicle was impounded and the driver left the scene by taxi.

*Aug. 7, 1 Ferry Causeway: Police were informed that a person was attempting to pay for a foot passenger fare with a counterfeit $100 bill. As there was a strong odour of alcohol on the breath of the suspect, the manager asked them to leave. The suspect left the area by taxi leaving the counterfeit bill on the counter. The complainant informed police that the suspect had a handful of the $100 bills on their person.

Ladner

*Aug. 3, 3600 Block of Highway 17: Police stopped a vehicle that passed them at an estimated speed of 132 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. The vehicle was stopped and the driver charged with driving at an excessive speed and the vehicle was impounded.

*Aug. 4, 4600 Block of Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant reported their black “Lole” fanny pack containing their wallet and keys stolen from an unlocked rack in the weight room of the Ladner Leisure Centre. The wallet contained bank and credit cards, driver’s license, and $60 cash. Surveillance video was reviewed, but no footage displayed the stolen bag.  Complainant advised to cancel cards and consider changing door locks due to the key theft.

*Aug. 5, 6300 Block of Highway 99: During a mobile speed enforcement action, police observed a vehicle passing other vehicles at a very high rate of speed. A speed of 150 km/h in an 80 km/h zone was clocked and the vehicle stopped. The driver was charged and the vehicle impounded. 

*Aug. 6, 5800 block of Mountain View Blvd: Complainant reported their Samsung S22 cell phone valued at $1,200, was stolen from their unlocked car. As the complainant had driven their vehicle home there was nothing for identification services. Driver advised that they had completed a remote wipe of the phone and contacted their service provider.

*Aug. 8, 4900 Block of 28th Avenue: Complainant reported their vehicle had been stolen.  The vehicle had been left unlocked with keys inside while parked in the driveway. The complainant described the suspect as Caucasian male, in their 20’s, 6’ tall, with messy hair.  Area patrols by police proved negative. File is under investigation.
