Mayor Lois Jackson (in bus) officially unveiled the South Delta Seniors Bus in April at the McKee Seniors Recreation Centre. She’s joined by McKee House Seniors Society members (from left) Peggy Knight, Arla Tanner, Linda Sanderson, Nick Kirby, Ben Branscombe and Doug Brazier.

The new South Delta Seniors Bus will pick up its first clients on Tuesday, June 28.

Three years ago, Delta council launched the North Delta Seniors Bus and has now expanded the service to include Ladner and Tsawwassen.

The extended service is made possible by a $20,000 2016 Age-Friendly Community Planning grant from the provincial government.

"Our goal when we started the North Delta Seniors Bus was to provide the same safe and accessible service to all seniors in Delta, and I'm so pleased to now be able to offer the service to South Delta residents too," said Mayor Lois Jackson. "All people in our community should feel included and have easy access to where they need to be."

The bus has 18 seats, plenty of space for walkers and is equipped with an automatic lift to accommodate wheelchairs and scooters.

The bus provides safe door-to-door service to give seniors easy access to local medical services, recreation centres, shopping locations and other community amenities. The South Delta Seniors Bus will run Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Routes will be determined by the users. The home base for the South Delta Seniors Bus is McKee Seniors Recreation Centre in Ladner. Call 604-358-8765 to register as a bus client (must be a resident of Delta) or call 604-940-6712 for more information. Registration is open now.

The program provides free transit for seniors who live in isolation, have mobility issues or who rely on others for their transportation needs.

The North Delta Seniors Bus currently serves 350 registered riders.
