Several charges are pending against a man after he was arrested in Ladner Monday afternoon on suspicion of stealing a vehicle hours earlier from Tsawwassen.

Delta Police say that the department received a call at 12:45 a.m. regarding an unknown person passed out behind the wheel of a pickup truck in the 4900 block of Westminster Ave., in Ladner.

Acting Insp. James Sandberg said a concerned citizen checked on the man to ensure his welfare and once the man was awake, he drove away.

Sandberg said approximately four blocks later, the driver crashed the truck into two parked cars.

“When the dispatchers queried the licence plate, the dispatcher learned the truck had been stolen from Tsawwassen that same morning,” said Sandberg. “Following the crash, the suspect driver attempted to flee the scene, but was detained by witnesses and Delta firefighters who were called to the scene, until the arrival of the responding police officers.”

Charges will be forwarded to Crown counsel for approval including possession of stolen property, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, fail to remain at the scene of a collision, and assault.

Police cannot release the suspect’s name until charges are formally sworn before the courts.

Police say there were no significant injuries from the incident.
