The province had already warned drivers to be prepared for closures on short notice

The bridges were closed due to the risk of ice falling from cables onto vehicles.

Delta and Metro Vancouver drivers will still have to navigate elsewhere including the George Massey Tunnel thanks to this morning's closures of the Alex Fraser Bridge and the Port Mann Bridge.

As of 1 p.m. Friday, the closures remain, and it may stay that way until things finally warm up.

The BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure this morning had issued an advisory to Lower Mainland commuters that both crossings were closed until further notice due to the risk of falling ice.

Freezing rain has caused ice to accumulate on the bridge cables.

To ensure public safety, the bridges were closed to traffic until conditions improve with warming weather, the ministry explained.

Drivers are being directed to detours and there is no estimated time when the bridges will reopen.

On Twitter, the ministry noted that the detours for the Alex Fraser also include:
- Northbound via Hwy 91/17 to Hwy 17 or Nordel (city).
- Southbound via Hwy 91A or East West Connector.

Both bridges have cable collar systems that are supposed to remove snow that builds up on the cables.

The ministry last night issued an advisory for divers to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary through Saturday afternoon, as Environment Canada warned the snowfall would switch to freezing rain and rain.

That was expected to create adverse driving conditions throughout the south coast, including the Fraser Valley.
