Forget about winning football or soccer provincial championships. Arguably the greatest athletic achievement at South Delta secondary school takes place each May and involves over 100 students.
The 16th annual SDSS triathlon was held May 23 and was once again deemed a great success thanks to the efforts of staff, students and the entire community.
Organized each year by longtime PE teacher Tamara Jobke, the triathlon is mandatory for every student in the school's PE 11 and 12 classes. An in-depth two month training program prepares the participants for the trek through Tsawwassen and Boundary Bay that included a 200 metre swim at the Winskill Aquatic Centre, a 11 km bike ride and a 3.5 km run.
This year's event was highlighted by Erin MacDougall setting a new best-ever time in the girls division with a clocking of 39 minutes and 58 seconds. What's most impressive, however, is seeing the versatility and athleticism of so many students to be able to complete the challenging course.
Training included swimming lessons at Winskill, bike rides, regular block runs and even tackling the stairs at Fred Gingell Park.
To pull off such an event, the school needs help from many including parents and the Delta Police with traffic control. Jobke had high praise for the work of the school's liaison officer Cst. Mike Atkinson.
"The community support is wonderful," said Jobke. "Mike really stepped up for us."
Jobke also singled out donations from Safeway and McDonald's, as well as assistance from Sandra Adamson and Kristi Schofield's classes, along with students from the SDSS Hockey Academy.
