The 2003 Delta Heat has produced a big win at the Canada Cup in South Surrey.

The rep girls fastpitch team captured the U16 Showcase Gold title after a thrilling 5-4 victory over Chinese-Taipei in the championship game.

The winning run was produced on a perfectly-executed suicide squeeze play.

The same two teams had met earlier in the week in round-robin play with Chinese-Taipei prevailing 6-5 — setting the stage for an intriguing rematch.

The road to the title was a long one for a Heat team that represents the Delta Fastpitch Association and competes in the “A” division at tournaments on both sides of the border.

The girls played a whopping 14 games over the seven days.

Other highlighted results included a late night 4-3 win over the Prairie Thunder to stay in championship contention then returning to the diamond the next morning for a 2-0 triumph against the White Rock Renegades. That averaged an earlier loss in the tournament by the same score.

The Heat return to Softball City this weekend for the U16A Provincial Championships.

The team includes: Abby Malesku, Ashley Specht, Ashley Epp, Bianca Tomlinson, Camryn Milley, Chloe Maher, Hayley Reid, Joanna Inkster, Jordan Roper, Kaitlyn Eng, Shae Sever, Sophie Hess and Taylor Kelly.

The girls are coached by Chris Roper, John Stipec, Pete Rogers and Brittney Meyer.
