'96 Heat repeat as B.C. champions

The Delta '96 Heat girls rep fastpitch team made it back-to-back provincial championships in dramatic fashion.

The Delta '96 Heat girls rep fastpitch team made it back-to-back provincial championships in dramatic fashion.

Montana Turnovitsky delivered a clutch one out hit in the bottom seventh inning to cash in Marley Parker as the Heat outlasted the Victoria '96 Devils to claim the U16 crown.

Parker, Francais Olexa and Carolyn Thoveson did an outstanding job on the mound throughout the championships, with Jennifer Linde and Lexie Brenneis catching. Fantastic fielding and hitting by Kennedy Bailey, Holly Speers, Haili Pettifer, Paige Harbord, Siara Couper, and pick up Sydney Antonyk kept the momentum up for the team. The win was a sweet one for the defending champions who have been riddled with injuries throughout the campaign, including season ending injuries to a pair of key players - Kaitlin Fraser and MacKenzie Welsh.

Still the girls have overcome the adversity to win a number of tournaments on both sides of the border. They are now preparing to represent B.C. at the U16 Canadian Championships, slated for Aug. 8-12 in Brantford, ON.
