The Delta Stars certainly made the most of their recent trip to Vancouver Island.

The U18 C1 hockey team captured its division at the 2022 Nanaimo Female Winter Classic thanks to a thrilling win over the hosts in the championship game.

The Stars earned their spot in the final with wins over Meadow Ridge (4-3) and Cowichan Valley (10-2) while battling Nanaimo to a 2-2 draw. The rematch with Nanaimo saw Delta overcome a short bench to prevail 5-4.

The Stars did it with just four blueliners as captain Alexis Kamiya and her sister Kylie, along with assistant captain Claire Bannister and Ameeran Grewal, thrived with the large workload.

Centers and assistant captains Emily Clutterham and Taylor Murrell also had key roles with Murrell notching the game winner at the 8:15 mark of the third period.

The forward group also featured Noriko Ikari, Kaylee Inouye, Lauren Karppa, Ryan O’Dwyer and Kajul Randhawa. Regular Sarah Wick was unable to make the trip.

Goaltender Alex Kay came up with some key saves, none bigger than a penalty shot with under two minutes remaining.

Head coach David Clutterham is joined on the bench by assistant Jeff Kay.
