The Greater Vancouver Canadians have yet to win in 2012 and now find themselves in serious jeopardy of missing the playoffs for the first time in recent memory.
The B.C. Major Midget Hockey League club saw its winless streak stretch to 10 games when they managed to take just one point from the last place Kootenay Ice last weekend. The two game series, which was played at Planet Ice in Coquitlam as part of the league's all-star weekend, was expected to jump start the Canadians' season. The Ice arrived with a 1-21-2 record that included two losses to Greater Vancouver back in early December.
Instead, Kootenay shocked the Canadians with a 3-2 victory on Saturday, netting the game winner with just 76 seconds remaining. A pair of third period goals from Seafair rookie Tyler Sandhu had put the locals on even terms until Jake Lucchini completed his hat trick for Kootenay.
The rematch 24 hours later was another tight affair after as the Canadians battled back from a 2-0 first period deficit to score twice in the second, then took a 3-2 lead on Taylor Foote's goal with 10: 42 remaining.
However, the Ice answered about four minutes later to conclude its most successful series of the season.
Sandhu at least had a productive weekend, adding a goal and an assist to his totals. He also participated in Friday night's all-star game which saw his Team White squad drop a 5-2 decision to Team Blue.
Other Canadians participating included Arvin Atwal, Troy Sutherland, Malcolm Glaholt and Chris Tai.
Greater Vancouver (12-10-6) will have another great chance to get back on track this weekend when it travels to Duncan to face the struggling South Island Thunderbirds who sit in ninth place in the 11 team league with a 3-18-5 record.
