South Delta secondary school's Senior PE and PE Superfit classes took to the water and the streets last month for the 17th annual SDSS Triathlon.

The event is comprised of a 200 metre swim, 11 km bike and a 3.5 km run.

The swimming leg takes place the at Winskill Aquatic Centre and is a staggered start format, beginning at noon, with 15 people swimming in five lanes.

Every 5 minutes a new heat of 15 participants enters the water.

The bike route starts at Winskill and heads down to Boundary Bay beach and ends back at the track in front of the school. The run takes students through the community, completing the short Bayview run as designated by the SDSS PE department.

Matt Wollin was the top male finisher with a time of 35: 23. He was followed by Mackenzie Connors (36: 12) and Callum Ayres (37: 21). Laura Paterson was the overall girls winner with a clocking of 42: 48. Also reaching the podium were Libby Pritchard (42: 58) and Emma Starko (43: 06).

The event would not be possible without terrific support from the community of Tsawwassen - from the staff at the Winskill Aquatic Centre, to Safeway for donating oranges and to the municipality for their patience.

The event is organized and run by the SDSS PE Department, headed by Tamara Jobke.

She thanks Constable Mike Atkinson and the Delta Police, all the parents, students, teachers, counselors and administrators who helped make the event a huge success once again

"I would like to extend a huge thank-you to all those parents who volunteered and committed their time and energy to cheer our students on and help keep them safe on the streets of Tsawwassen for the triathlon," she added.

"Time is valuable, volunteering is invaluable! Volunteerism is a precious resource we cannot afford to lose!"
