It was a golden finish for a number of Delta ringette players at the B.C. Winter Games in Vernon.

With a Zone 4 (Fraser Delta) squad that feature 14 players or staff members from Delta, the girls reached the top of the podium with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Fraser Valley.

Zone 4 broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of second period goals and the girls hung on for the dramatic win against an opponent that featured many familiar faces from Lower Mainland Ringette League play.

Fraser Delta had cruised to a 7-0 win over Fraser Valley in earlier round-robin play but it proved to be a much tighter affair with so much on the line.

"It was intense," says Monica Salt, Fraser River Delta co-captain. "We have friends on the other team."

"The Games were like a "mini Olympics," added Arisa Cadeau, the team's other co-captain.

Other team members from Delta included Ingrid Bakke, Arisa Cadeau, Brianne Chow, Daniella Crawford, Cassandra Dercaloustian, Kirsten Krajnc, Taylor McIntosh, Maile McMillan, Jennifer Shannon, Jenna Suzuki, Carissa Whitely, Madison Woodson, Lisa Cadeau, Carri McMillan and Doug Salt.

Other highlights at the Games for Delta athletes included Justin Russell capturing a pair of bronze medals in speed skating - reaching the podium in the 200 metre pursuit and 1500 metre race.

In judo, Tavis Jamieson was a silver medalist in the under 81 kg class, while Joel Scheelenberg earned bronze in the under 73 kg class.

The pair, along with George St. Amour, added bronze in the mixed event.

Delta athletes were also prominent in the karate team competition as Ethan Cheng, Andrew Eng and Grayson Van Grol won bronze.

In men's gymnastics, Kevin Hignell captured silver in the provincial three level pommel horse. In the team competition, Delta gymnasts Maria Starko, Alicia Farquharson and Michelle Anderton were on the Zone 4 team that won bronze.
