Delta Deas Rowing Club's junior program continued its strong sprint spring season, this time on local waters at last weekend's 23rd annual Scholastic Regatta.

The two-day event featured over 350 athletes from 15 Lower Mainland clubs. The hosts more than held their own against elite competition. earning seven top three finishes, including a convincing victory by Hilary Schaape in the girls lightweight singles event.

Schaape only started rowing last September which makes her achievement even more impressive.

Earlier, DDRC was at Lake Stevens in Washington State where the club came through with eight top three performances, including four wins and a second place finish.

The rowers then moved onto the highly competitive Brentwood Regatta which typically attracts top clubs from throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Despite Delta's small numbers, the locals earned three top three results, including second place finishes in women's doubles and women's single. Rounding out the medal winners was a bronze in men's single.

It was then off to Shawnigan Lake where the success continued. Schaape won her novice single race in convincing fashion, finishing 20 boat lengths ahead of her nearest rival. Robert Hodgins was second in his novice single race, while DDRC also managed a third place result in lightweight boys doubles.

The DDRC juniors are now looking forward to a busy summer season. The club's learn-to-row youth program has started is actively looking for new participants. For more information, visit www.deltadeas. com or call 604-946-3074.
