Field lacrosse player Erika Mackenzie is among the first-ever female recipients of the third annual Burnaby Mountain Selects (BMS) Scholar Athlete Awards.

Established in 2010, the Burnaby Mountain Selects Scholar Athlete Awards were developed to help celebrate academic achievement and on-field excellence for each scholastic year.

This year's BMS Scholar Athlete Awards recognize a program high 85 student-athletes who competed in the fall 2011 and/or summer 2012 BMS Elite Touring Program and achieved an academic average of 80 percent or higher for the 2011-2012 school year.

BMS Scholar Athletes reside from public and private schools in 26 communities across British Columbia's Lower Mainland, B.C. Coast, B.C. Interior and Washington State.

With the launch of the Burnaby Mountain Selects Girls Elite Touring Program in the fall of 2011, this year also marks the first ever female winners.

MacKenzie, a Grade 12 student at Delta secondary school, will be honoured at the Maple Leaf Awards Dinner in January, an annual event that celebrates youth and collegiate field lacrosse in British Columbia.

Two other players from North Delta were also recognized - Liam Fennan (midfielder, Boys Elite Team) and Rory Trevorrow (defender, Boys Elite Team).
