Pee Wee 'C' lacrosse team finishes memorable season in gold medal game against Penticton

Delta Islanders Pee Wee "C" lacrosse team claimed the silver medal in an exciting final with Penticton Heat in the recent B.C.

Lacrosse Championships in Richmond.

The Islanders took on Juan de Fuca, Penticton, Richmond and West Kootenay to earn their place in the gold medal game, where they held undefeated Penticton to their smallest margin of victory at the tourney.

Several Islanders achieved special honours during the provincial recognition ceremonies, including Liam Harris, who received the Warrior Fair Play Award in recognition of 30 points and zero penalty minutes throughout the regular season,

Olivia Wickett was named a provincial allstar and Bryson Ferry was a Warrior "Tricks with Sticks" finalist.

Goaltender Brayden Maskell, Paige Griffin, Reiko Bohmert and Olivia Wickett all accepted Game MVP awards during the tourney.

"This club dug down deep and nearly won it all. Their focus and perseverance was amazing," said head coach Lester Phillips. "They were the least penalized team. They finished fifth in the regular season, and swept the playoffs to qualify for the B.C.s.

"A third of our team has never played lacrosse before. We've got kids who overcame tremendous adversity, personal issues and gave up other activities to commit to the team. Together they can claim highest achieving Pee Wee team in Delta and the Lower Mainland, and top two in B.C. for 2012."

The players had excellent support from goaltending specialist Zach Wickett, assistant coaches Joe Maskell, Savannah Phillips and Brandon Dillon, strength and conditioning coach Cara Thien, as well as encouragement from volunteers, families, friends and Delta Lacrosse.
