Juvenile Rams defeat defending champions

The expansion South Delta Rams made quite the statement in their first-ever regular season game in the B.C. Football Conference Tier II Juvenile League.

The expansion South Delta Rams made quite the statement in their first-ever regular season game in the B.C. Football Conference Tier II Juvenile League.

The Rams faced defending champion North Delta Longhorns and came through with a decisive 2111 victory.

The Rams started aggressively with a short kickoff which they recovered on the North Delta 50-yard-line.

Both teams moved the ball sporadically until South Delta opened the scoring in the second quarter on a touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Calderwood to Taylor Flavel. The Rams smothering defense held the Longhorns high-powered offence through the first half until Travis Coutts found the end zone to extend the lead to 14-0 at the intermission.

In the second half, both defences played well and the battle of field position resulted in the Rams surrendering two safeties. Defensive End Travis McDonald sealed the victory when he scooped up a fumble and rumbled over 40 yards to pay dirt.

The South Delta offence controlled much of the clock for the balance of the game until the Longhorns scored on the last play with a well-executed hook and ladder.

The Rams look to make it two straight wins when they face Prince George on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Minoru Park in Richmond.
