Ladner pitchers help Nanaimo capture Western Canadian title

It was a golden weekend for Ladner Minor Baseball players Mackenzie Marquis and Daelen Magcalas at the Western Canadian Pee Wee AAA Baseball Championships in Nanaimo.

It was a golden weekend for Ladner Minor Baseball players Mackenzie Marquis and Daelen Magcalas at the Western Canadian Pee Wee AAA Baseball Championships in Nanaimo.

The pair were picked up by the host Pirates and helped them win it all, capped by an impressive 7-0 victory over B.C. champion Abbotsford in the gold medal game.

Marquis and Magcalas pitched at key points during the tournament, including Marquis throwing six complete innings in the semi-final against Manitoba 2.

Both played during the all-star season for the Ladner Red Sox which turned in a solid showing at the provincial championships.

Ladner opened with a 4-0 loss to Nanaimo, then hung tough with eventual silver medalist Coquitlam-Moody in a 2-1 defeat. The locals rebounded with wins over Richmond (17-8) and Ridge Meadows (6-5) to finished tied with Nanaimo for second place in the round-robin standings but were edged out based on the head-to-head meeting.
