Merrick & Gordon lead Ice Hawks past Flames

The Delta Ice Hawks will get a good idea tonight if their mid-season slump is truly behind them.

The Delta Ice Hawks will get a good idea tonight if their mid-season slump is truly behind them.

After going winless in five games, the longest stretch in two seasons for the defending Pacific International Hockey League champions, the Hawks have managed back-to-back victories including a 6-1 triumph on Tuesday against Ridge Meadows.

Delta will be looking to extend its winning streak tonight in Abbotsford where it looks to sweep the season series against the reigning provincial and Western Canadian champion Pilots.

The Hawks needed a lift to get out of their funk and veterans Aaron Merrick and Anthony Brito were happy to provide it. Merrick had a pair of goals and one assist in a 4-0 win over Port Moody last Saturday, then added a hat trick against the Flames at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

Brito, who returned from a three-game suspension had six points in the wins, including three helpers on Tuesday. The third member of the line, PIJHL scoring leader Mak Barden had four points to give him 46 in 27 games.

Local product Grange Gordon had his biggest night of the season against the Flames with a pair of goals and one assist.

Alex Anhert nearly recorded his second straight shutout, turning aside 23 shots to lower his goals against average to a league best 1.79.
