Wins at Holly Park in Ladner send Delta Coastal Selects U13 and U17 teams to this summer's showcase tournament in South Surrey

A pair of Delta Coastal Selects (DCS) girls soccer teams have extended their seasons to this summer’s Provincial “A” Cup Championships thanks to qualifying wins on the weekend.

Holly Park in Ladner hosted a trio of games last Sunday to determine the final Coastal representative in the provincials that are slated to be held over the Canada Day weekend at South Surrey Athletic Park. Each match featured teams that were coming off semi-final losses in the Coastal “A” Cup playdowns.

For U13 DCS, it was a chance to continue its outstanding season. The girls’ cup hopes ended with a tough 2-1 loss in penalty kicks two weeks earlier to Port Coquitlam. This time, they prevailed 1-0 over New West Athletica on a goal by Lauryn Yee.

The Division One team was formed last spring through a partnership between South Delta United Soccer Club and North Delta Football Club after the B.C. Coastal Soccer League made the decision to eliminate the Metro Division to reduce the number of tiers, starting with the incoming U13s for the 2021/22 campaign.

“This is a great group of girls and they've worked really hard this year. They are unbeaten in regulation time in their last 31 games and are excited to be competing in their first provincials in a couple of months,” said Sean Semple who coaches the team along with Tavis Bowie.

Also headed to South Surrey is U17 DCS after its 1-0 win over the Burnaby Storm on Sunday. The Selects were also coming off a tough semi-final loss in penalty kicks to Port Coquitlam. Now there will be a chance for redemption this summer where they will also see Coastal Cup champion West Van along with teams from the island and interior.

Preventing a complete sweep by the home teams Sunday was U14 DCS being edged 1-0 by Burnaby.

On the boys' side, U13 Coastal Cup finalists Division One Delta Coastal Selects and Division Two South Delta United are also headed to the Provincial Cup in their respective tournaments in South Surrey and Kamloops.
