Stingrays send 22 swimmers to provincials in Nanaimo

The Ladner Stingrays will be well-represented at this weekend's B.C. Summer Swimming Championships in Nanaimo after a strong showing at the Fraser South Regional Meet.

Summer Swimming Championships in Nanaimo after a strong showing at the Fraser South Regional Meet.

Thanks to excellent work by the Stingrays coaching staff, the club will be sending 22 swimmers to Vancouver Island.

The Regionals, held at Watermania in Richmond, featured plenty of outstanding performances with several races featuring Ladner swimmers touching the wall in first and second place.

Here is a rundown of the top results:

Division One

Ryan McCarthy (1st 100 free, 100 IM; 2nd 50 free).

Division Two

Jemma deFondaumiere (3rd 50 breast). Taylor Van Marrewyk (1st 50 breast).

Division Three

Jamie Hutton (1st 50 back; 2nd 100 free).

Division Four Storm-Leigh

deFondaumiere (1st 100 free; 2nd 50 free; 3rd 100 back). Maya Sato-Klemm (2nd 100 free).

Division Five

Brandon Freiberger (1st 100 free; 2nd 50 free, 100 back, 50 fly).

Division Six

Sophie Ferguson (1st 100 fly, 200 IM; 3rd 50 fly and 100 free). Hannah Gerrard (2nd 100 breast). Ali Gracan (1st 50 free, 50 fly, 100 free; 2nd 100 fly).

Anneka Hunchak (1st 100 back; 2nd 200 IM) Brittany Mageau (3rd 100 back); Matt Lock (1st 100 back, 2nd 50 free, 50 fly, 100 free).

Division Seven

Francine deLotbiniere-Bassett (1st 100 breast; 2nd 200 IM; 3rd 100 free). Alyssia Hunchak (2nd 100 fly, 3rd 100 back and 200 IM; 4th 100 free). Danielle Mageau (2nd 100 breast).

Bobby Hider (3rd 100 free).

Division Eight

Madeleine deLotbiniere-Bassett (3rd 50 fly, 100 back; 5th 50 free and 100 free).

O Category II

Kiana Beaton (1st 100 free, breast, 50 fly; 2nd 50 free). Megan Kwiatkowski (1st 50 free, 100 back and 200 IM).

The Stingrays also qualified six relay teams.

The Division 6 girls advanced to Nanaimo in both the medley and free relays. They broke the regional meet record by 5/100 of a second in the 200 free relay. The Division 7 and 8 girls also qualified in the medley and free relays.

The final day of the provincials featuring regional relays. These teams feature the fastest swimmers in each of the strokes.

Stingray qualifiers include: Division one Ryan McCarthy - freestyle. Division two Taylor Van Marrewyk - breast.

Division three Jamie Hutton - back. Division 5 Brandon Freiberger - free. Division 6 Anneka Hunchak - back, Ali Gracan-free, Matt Lock - back. Division 7 Danielle Mageau - breast.
