The Tsawwassen Tennis Club hosted the sixth annual Bob Putnam Junior Challenger Aug. 6-7 with impressive results produced by the local contingent of players.

The Tennis B.C. sanctioned event attracted 70 boys and girls from the Lower Mainland, as well as Vancouver Island, Portland and Palm Desert.

They competed in four different age categories - U12, U14, U16 and U18.

Five Tsawwassen juniors participated with two advancing to the finals. No. 3 seed Scott Bailey battled No. 2 seed Alexei Zaroubo in the U16 Boys final, losing a very close match in a tiebreaker.

No. 3 seed Jennie Jackson also reached the final, falling 5-7, 2-6 to Stella Stong.

The tournament proved to be a big success thanks to the efforts of Tsawwassen Tennis Club volunteers and Tennis B.C. officials. Donations from Thrifty Foods, Safeway, Tim Hortons and Shoppers Drug Mart made it a truly a community event.

The tournament is named after Tsawwassen Tennis Club member Bob Putnam. The club is located on English Bluff Road.
