Upset win earns playoff banner for U18 Delta Stars

Girls hockey team hadn't beaten its first place opponent all season until it mattered most

South Delta U18 C1 Stars are playoff champions after a big 5-2 win over Burnaby in the championship game.

The U18 Delta Stars girls C1 hockey team capped a terrific run in the Pacific Coast Amateur banner playoffs with a clutch performance when it mattered the most.

After placing third in league play, the Stars joined five other teams in their playoff group. They produced wins over Vancouver C1 (2-0), Richmond Ravens C1 (4-1) and Washington Wild 19UAA (3-2), while battling Langley to a 2-2 tie and falling 4-2 to Burnaby C1.

The 3-1-1 record was good enough to advance to the playoff banner final and another crack at Burnaby, a team that captured the regular season title and Delta had not beaten all season.

Taylor Katsube got the Stars off to a great start with a pair of first period goals. Burnaby cut the lead in half before Katsube added her hat trick goal. Ashley Westeringh extended the margin to 4-1 to close out the second period. Taylor Murrell added a fifth goal in the third and that was more than enough for goaltender Cal McCormack who was terrific in a 5-2 victory.

The girls all pushed themselves hard and played an exciting game of hockey for the championship and really came together as a team. They now look forward to concluding their season at the upcoming Party In Da House Tournament.

The Stars’ roster also features: Claire Bannister, Ava Campbell, Emily Clutterham, Lucy Green (captain), Ameeran Grewal, Molly Hoffman, Noriko Ikari, Siya Johal (assistant), Rachel Johnson (assistant), Alexis Kamiya (assistant), Kylie Kamiya, Lauren Karppa, Alex Kay, Kajul Randhawa, Amira Samra, Emma Siebold and Sarah Wick.

The head coach is Sean Johnson with help from assistants TJ Johal, Dave Clutterham, Jeff Kay and James McCormack.
