Young swimmers steal the spotlight as Dolphins host their own invitational

The Winskill Dolphins hosted over 200 swimmers at their invitational meet.

The little club from Tsawwassen had its own National and Provincial performers on hand, but it was the Junior and Regional Dolphins, many of whom had never raced at a Lower Mainland Regional meet before, that stole the show.

Decked out in blue and yellow, Mia Calder, Emily Cocking, Emma Colter, D'Alton and Devon Dupuis, Amy and Meghan Hendrickson, Kaitlyn Hurst, Sarah Martin, Connor Nelson, Maxim Niderost, Reghan Nobbs, Genevieve Salahor, Calvin Slinn, Sidney Marshall, Joshua Yeo, Rasmus Gundermann, and Ryan Martin made huge improvements in events ranging from 50 metre backstroke to 100 freestyle

Highlights included Ryan Martin swimming his first 800m free race and Joshua Yeo competing in the 400 free for the first time ever.

"Exposure to racing is at the core of our sport and to provide that experience to these young swimmers is essential to their development," said Dolphins Head Development Coach Erin Taylor. "Weekends like this are where the passion for swimming begins, where the whole team gets involved, from novice to elite athletes, coaches and parents, and the energy and atmosphere captures the imagination."

The Winskill Dolphins meet is the club's annual fundraiser and an integral piece in its continued operation. For this reason, Winskill Dolphins would like to thank the generous support its major meet sponsors, Thrifty Foods and Cobbs Bread, who made the event possible and fed the hardworking meet volunteers. Thanks as well to the Corporation of Delta and the staff at the Winskill Pool.
