Delta mayoral candidate Vytas Vaitkus has a name that is memorable. It reflects his proud Lithuanian heritage, which he shares with such notables as Vitas Gerulaitis, Bob Dylan, Larry King, Sean Penn, Pink and Arvydas Sabonis.
Day to day, Vytas likes to be called V.
V and family – Fawn, his wife of 28 years, and their sons Aleck and Logan – have lived in Delta for more than 20 years. Until 2011, the family also included Vytas Sr.
V brings a diverse background to his bid for mayor including a love of the arts, sports and volunteering in such things as dance, martial arts, soccer, Terry Fox runs and local musical and theatre productions.
Professionally V is in the business and technology world.
Currently V is a regional manager and has responsibilities for the overall management of the BC and Yukon Territory.
“I am running for mayor because I bring 25-plus years of meaningful experience to this important role,” he said. “I have fresh ideas and perspectives, and no fear to ask the tough questions of why and why not.”
He is the only candidate to propose complementing a Massey Tunnel replacement with a light rail system and to start momentum on a post-secondary facility in South Delta focusing on environmental sciences, marine biology and agriculture.
He champions affordable housing for Delta.
“Houses should not be foreign investment assets,” he said.
He also supports a proactive stance to development in Delta – as opposed to an ‘I didn’t see that coming’ one.
“The campaign journey is tough,” V adds. “I don’t have funding and I am not a known name. I am not surrounded by a slate and I am campaigning while also volunteering, parenting and working full time. However it is quite fantastic. People say they like my hard work and my honest, down-to-earth, creative approach to this position.
“I am working hard to be elected so I can truly use my skillset for Deltonians.”
