Another Delta council incumbent has announced she’s running in this fall’s municipal election.

Jeannie Kanakos plans to run once again as an independent.

“It has been an honour serving the Delta residents and I am seeking re-election to continue work on issues before our community,” stated Kanakos.

Her press release noted she is known for tackling complex challenging issues and for doing her homework.

Kanakos said she provided leadership on the issue of the proposed thermal coal facility at Surrey Fraser Docks and supported the interagency panel established by Delta.

“I believe that council makes decisions for now and for future generations and that we need a sustainable approach which balances our economic needs with our environment,” she said.

Kanakos was first elected to council in 2005 and served one term before leaving to try her hand at provincial politics. She returned for the 2011 election, getting elected after running with fellow independents Bruce McDonald and the school board’s Laura Dixon.

So far, the other incumbent council members who announced they are running again are McDonald, Sylvia Bishop and Ian Paton.

Coun. Robert Campbell and Mayor Lois Jackson have yet to announce their plans.

The only certainty heading into this election is that at least one candidate from the outside will get elected, winning the seat vacated by Scott Hamilton.

North Delta resident Lori Mayhew announced her candidacy recently, but more candidates are expected to soon follow.

The election is set for Nov. 15. Council terms will increase from three to four years.
