Alex Megalos says he has a free speaking voice – a voice for change and a voice you can trust.

The Ladner resident has ventured into civic politics by seeking the mayor’s chair in this Saturday’s election.

“I will not be controlled by outside voices – even provincial or federal. I’m not controlled by any corporations or businesses. No one is going to buy me,” he said. “When I speak for the people, I will speak for them. I don’t want any levels of government coming into this community and dictating what we can or cannot do.”

Growing up in Ladner, the travel bug hit him in his 20s. Megalos spent 12 years travelling and working in Europe. When he returned home to South Delta, he didn’t sense the feeling of positive change he thought he would see.

“I wanted to run for MP awhile back, but it would be like talking to a brick wall if you were an independent, so I took a step back and decided to run for mayor,” he said. “With Delta being behind in some ways, I just couldn’t take that when I came back from my travels.

“When I came back in August 2013 I realized two things: everything was so expensive and that Delta was years behind. I really thought that Ladner’s waterfront would have a little more, more development, restaurants and coffee shops. As I said, I grew up here in Ladner seeing the changes until I left and everything looked OK, so what happened?”

Megalos said more work needs to be done to improve parks and road infrastructure, consensus needs to happen on the George Massey Tunnel replacement project and the new casino should be put on hold.

He said he has enjoyed the campaign and engaging with people.

“Generally it is positive. People are saying we can’t get anywhere with the old leadership and that it is good there are more people running. Residents like the option to have three independent candidates who will listen to what the people want.

“Honestly, you do not have to like me, but I want you to know I will do the job that needs to be done. I would also like you to think of this in another way. Those who are running to be your next mayor are applying for a job, and it is the people who approve the application. You must ask the hard questions and make sure you get the answers.”
