Editorial: Slow down

It is just me or is everyone seemingly in a hurry these days?

I ask this question as I ponder a couple of near traffic misses that I witnessed, check that, was almost involved in, in the past few weeks while travelling in our community.

I live in North Delta, work in Ladner. Most days I travel along Scott Road and get onto Ladner Trunk Road for my 20-to 25-minute commute to work and back.

Twice now, while travelling down Ladner Trunk Road, I have been passed by two speeding motorists, all in an effort to get one car length in front, and on both occasions, the drivers narrowly avoided on-coming traffic and colliding into me as I slammed on my brakes to let them back into the correct lane of traffic.

Was this reckless driving behavior worth almost causing a serious multi-vehicle collision?

Is getting ahead by one more car length going to get you to your destination that much faster?

My answer would be no to both of these questions and I bet that most of you out there would agree with me.

Too many drivers are travelling way too fast putting other drivers at risk.

This week puts these risky driving behaviours and other dangerous driving habits in the spotlight. Tuesday marked the start of Canada’s Road Safety Week, a seven-day national campaign, which aims to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world.

Delta Police are using its social media platforms to get out safe driving messages, be it asking motorists to slow down, to not drive impaired by drugs or alcohol or to not be distracted while driving by putting down your cell phone.

Again, I ask, the question, are the fast speeds and reckless driving worth it?
