LNG protest 2
A recent protest was held outside the Tillbury LNG facility in Delta.

Editor:

Facts and questions that must be answered regarding the proposed expansion of the Tilbury LNG plant and a shipping jetty on the Fraser River in Delta before it should proceed.

Facts related to the siting of the Tilbury LNG plant and jetty came from a document called; Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Import Terminals: Siting, Safety, and Regulation U.S.A.

1. If the LNG spills into the water by accident or an act of terrorism, it will not immediately ignite, but it will form a vapor cloud that can drift some distance from the spill site until it encounters an ignition source, creating a large LNG “Pool Fire”, that would, displace breathable air, causing asphyxiation and leak back to the spill site causing Immeasurable damage to property and loss of life.

2. Would it meet the U.S. National Fire Protection Association standards of site location and safety to the public recognized throughout the world?

3. LNG tankers and land based facilities like Tilbury LNG could be vulnerable to Terrorisim or “cyber-attacks”

4. Who would be in charge of assuring that such attacks would not occur and pay for the cost of police and fire protection?

5. Is the Tilbury site on the Fraser River a suitable safe site for LNG tankers?

6. Should we not have a Hazard analyses done before proceeding with this expansion of the terminal and the building of the jetty?

The public needs to be assured that the siting of the Tilbury LNG plant and shipping jetty in Delta will not affect their safety, quality of life or loss of property values.

These safety concerns have to be met before any further investments are made by a taxpaying crown corporations.
