Ladner's Jason Fram is enjoying a standout university career at Alberta while studying business.

Alberta Golden Bears are three-time Canada West men’s hockey champions and Jason Fram is a big reason why.

The 23-year-old from Ladner is enjoying another outstanding season for the Edmonton school. For the second straight year he is the recipient of the Mervyn “Red” Dutton Trophy as the Canada West Conference’s top defenceman.

Fram won the honour last season after finishing third in conference scoring among blueliners with 23 points in 28 games (9G–14A). He followed up that campaign with an even better one this season, posting 30 points (9G-21A) in 28 games to lead all conference defenders.

He is the first Canada West defenceman to record a 30-point season since 2013/14, when Calgary's Giffen Nyren and Alberta's Jordan Rowley both recorded 30 points. Fram was also named to the Canada West First All-Star Team.

“There's little doubt in anyone's mind that Jason is the best offensive defenceman in the conference,” said Alberta head coach Ian Herbers. “What has impressed me the most this year, is how much better he is getting at the defensive part of his game. He is continually improving his gap, which has allowed him to break up the play before it happens.”

Fram scored twice in Alberta’s 3-1 game one win over Calgary en route to winning the semi-final series. The Golden Bears then defeated Saskatchewan in the conference finals.

Alberta now moves onto the U Sports National Championship in Lethbridge, March 14-17.

Fram enjoyed an impressive five-year career in the Western Hockey League with the Spokane Chiefs.

He capped the run by being named to the WHL Second All-Star Team back in 2016 when he finished with a career-best 12 goals. A year earlier, he managed 62 points in 70 games. He also served two seasons as team captain.

After coming through the South Delta Minor rep program, Fram spent one season in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League with the Greater Vancouver Canadians. That year, he was also a 15-year-old call-up for the Richmond Sockeyes during their run to the Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial junior B Championships.
