The City of Delta is notifying residents that the wharf at Wellington Point Park is closed until further notice due to erosion exacerbated by king tides.

The city notes it will provide updates on the condition of the wharf once it has been further reviewed.

King tides, which are are the highest tides of the year, are storm surges that can lead to coastal flooding and erosion.

Areas around Westham Island, Boundary Bay and Beach Grove are most vulnerable in Delta.

The flood risk to those communities is highest during the winter months when tides can reach or exceed 5.0 metres at Point Atkinson.

The city follows a staged flood preparedness and response plan which sets various stages in preparing and responding to possible flood events.

At the beginning of each winter season, beach access points at Boundary Bay and Beach Grove are secured with lock blocks and large sandbags as required to provide temporary flood protection. As well, additional sandbags are provided at select locations for area residents.

Weather forecasts are monitored throughout the winter season and in the event of significant storms, advisories are posted using changeable message sign boards.

Residents are also advised to keep an eye on weather forecasts and tide predictions, as well as have an evacuation plan in place and follow local authorities’ guidance.
