The appearance of birds in the garden and the songs they sing are synonymous with spring.

Do you wonder what type of birds they are? What are those bright yellow birds, or the birds with the black head and white mask called? Who is making that trill, buzz, or ticking sound? If you are a gardener (or a wannabe), spring is also a great time to implement creating a compost pile to improve the quality of your garden soil. The library is a great resource to learn about birds and gardening. Begin with these free Delta library programs:

Learn how to compost and make great dirt on Tuesday, May 9, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Ladner Pioneer Library.

Compost is a valuable addition to your garden. It is rich in nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. Presenter Rhiannon Johnson welcomes both beginners and experienced composters. Learn how to compost and maintain and optimize your compost pile.

Discover how to reduce your effort and produce free compost year-round. Hear about different composting systems, such as worm composting and leaf mulching. Please bring a container of your current compost so we can all learn from each other’s stages of compost. Registration is required.

Everyone is invited to let’s discover birds! Join us on Wednesday, May 24, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Library for this fun and interactive program, where staff will guide you on a nature walk through Highland Park before returning to the library to create a bird’s nest craft.

While we observe and study birds, we will gather materials for use during our crafting activity. Baskets for material provided. Children are to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Ages three and up. Registration is required.

See the events page at: https://www.fvrl.bc.ca/ to register for all library programs.
