Minister's Minute: Let your hearts do the understanding

So if you want to understand who God is and what God is like look to Jesus, and let your hearts do the understanding.

Smart phones are modern conveniences that most folks have come to take for granted. Take a moment to consider that these common, small devices are far more technologically sophisticated than the computers contained in the space-craft which transported human beings safely from the earth to the moon and back again in the 1969 Apollo 11 lunar mission. Amazing.

The modern trajectory of technological progress has indeed been astounding. Over the course of the last century, automobiles became our main means of transportation, humans traverse the globe in a massive interconnected network of air travel, antibiotics were discovered, and heart transplants performed. Now scientists are developing better and more sustainable means of harvesting the earth’s energy. Consider the astoundingly short amount of time it has taken to develop vaccines against the COVID-19 virus. All of that requires quite a bit of understanding!

Human beings have indeed been gifted with the ability to reason and to think abstractly.

But even such amazing intellectual capability has its limits — especially when it comes to the matter of God.

We humans continue to struggle with spiritual questions. Some very smart people look to prove or disprove the existence of God.  But unlike natural phenomena, God is not an object that can be quantified or measured. The Bible witnesses that an understanding of God will not come through the power of human reason, but only come through divine revelation. God must take the initiative if we are to know anything about God. The good news is that God has done this! If you want to understand who God is and what God is like, look to Jesus — God’s ultimate divine revelation to humanity. Open up a Bible and pray for understanding. Read about Jesus in the gospel accounts and in the testimony of the Apostles. Hear the testimony of those alive today who have been freed from bondage and forgiven of their sins and promised eternal life. The full meaning of this amazing love will not come through our heads, but our hearts. So if you want to understand who God is and what God is like look to Jesus, and let your hearts do the understanding.
